Artificial intelligence is creating new categories of legal, economic, environmental, and societal harm faster than existing legal systems can identify and respond to them.
The AI Accountability Initiative exists to identify those harms early, build the factual and scientific record, educate stakeholders, develop legal theories, and pursue accountability through research, advocacy, and litigation.
Emerging Harms
Vast categories of organized fraud are now demonstrably AI-enabled. AI is being used to create fake profile photos and identities, write and translate convincing messages at scale, identify and target likely victims, and produce fraudulent documents and investment materials.
The explosive expansion of AI data centers is creating a serious public-health threat. The fossil-fuel power plants and diesel generators that keep them running release fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and other toxic pollutants associated with respiratory disease, premature death and increased cancer risk.
Generative AI is accelerating child exploitation. It is used to create abuse material, manipulate real photographs of children, automate grooming and extortion, and reproduce harmful material at a scale that overwhelms victims, platforms and law enforcement.
Center for AI Harms
As AI reshapes society, new categories of harm will continue to emerge. The Initiative exists to identify those issues early, develop an evidence base, and help ensure that legal systems evolve alongside technological change.
The AI Accountability Initiative is dedicated to identifying, researching, and addressing the legal, social, economic, and environmental consequences of artificial intelligence and its supporting infrastructure. Through original research, investigations, public education, expert collaboration, and strategic legal action, the Initiative works to ensure that innovation is matched by accountability.

AI is transforming the world faster than laws can keep up.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping every sector of the economy. As these technologies move from software into physical infrastructure, healthcare, finance, transportation, manufacturing, employment, and consumer products, new forms of harm are emerging alongside extraordinary innovation.
The AI Accountability Initiative exists to understand those harms before they become widely recognized.
We conduct original research, investigate emerging patterns of injury, collaborate with technical experts, advocate for accountability, and pursue strategic litigation where the facts support legal action.
Our work spans AI systems, autonomous technologies, data center infrastructure, privacy, cybersecurity, environmental impacts, consumer protection, and other emerging technologies.
You have a right to understand how AI systems impact you and what legal protections exist.
The rapid buildout of AI infrastructure is creating a new category of litigation that extends well beyond traditional environmental law. Rather than viewing data centers as isolated facilities, they should be understood as large-scale industrial infrastructure projects with significant impacts on land use, energy, water, emissions, and surrounding communities.
As AI infrastructure expands and more operational data becomes available, environmental investigations could evolve into claims involving groundwater contamination, drinking water, air emissions, utility cost shifting, and, where supported by scientific evidence, toxic exposure or personal injury litigation.
The question is no longer whether AI infrastructure will generate litigation. It already is. The opportunity is identifying where evidence, regulatory pressure, and community impacts are converging before those individual disputes mature.
